Practical test help
You will need to take a car theory test before you can take the car practical test. You will need to be aged at least 17 years old (16 if you are on the enhanced rate of mobility on PIP) when you turn up for your test.
The driving test costs are:
Monday - Friday £62
Saturday (weekday evenings and bank holidays) £75

Disqualified drivers needing to take an extended driving test have different fees and some changes to the test. Press the button below for more information about these differences.

The test will last for around 40 minutes. During this time, you will:
-
Answer 1 show me and 1 tell me question.
-
Be asked to perform 1 of the 4 manoeuvres.
-
Drive independently for 20 minutes by following the sat nav or signs on a pre-determined route.
-
Possibly demonstrate a controlled stop (emergency stop).
-
Pull up several times in various places along the side of the road, then move off safely.
-
Follow directions from the examiner for the remainder of the time.

It is highly recommended that you spend plenty of time going over areas of your driving where you feel less confident or regularly make mistakes.

You should read through all of the Show Me, Tell Me questions that you could be asked. You should also familiarise yourself with the car that you will be taking to test, so that you will be able to demonstrate the relevant parts of the questions safely and efficiently.

Do not rush getting your test booked. Make sure that you fully understand how to drive safely and confidently and are able to respond appropriately in many different environments, as this is what the examiner will be looking at during your test.

Finally, make sure you know where your driving licence is as you will be unable to take your test if you cannot present this to the examiner on the day.

Do you drive:
Legally - Following the rules of the road at all times.
Safely - Keeping yourself and others from harm. Being aware of your surroundings at all times.
Efficiently - Using forward planning in your driving. Accelerating, braking and steering smoothly.
